The Memory House is an evolving series of works I started in early 2011.
We all have memories of the places we have lived and grew up in, but as time moves on these memories grow dimmer. With the work in this series I am painting my immediate surroundings as if they were such memories. I paint the pictures after having studied buildings in York and then add elements which seem fitting to me - resulting in matching memories of my childhood in The Netherlands.
Although the work is quite close to the series of paintings I did called Walls, the paintings in The Memory House differ in that they are more painterly and seem to have a more romantic streak. Whereas Walls was about composition and form, the new series of works is more about atmosphere and surroundings. Nature is slowly taking over.
