The representation of three-dimensional objects on a flat surface is something artists have been fascinated with for centuries. When looking at backgrounds of paintings by Giotto and contemporaries, one cannot help but wonder about the great abstract quality of the near sculptural structures witnessed there.

My recent series of paintings focuses on architectural shapes. It is a departure from previous architectural paintings in which I concentrated heavily on projecting small homes, creating overly simplified cottages in (often nocturnal) landscapes. These images were more a reflection on the idea and mood of house and home.

My recent work focuses on shape, form and composition. The surrounding landscape has been abandoned as I zoom in on the building, resulting in a near abstract image. When making sketches or taking photographs of buildings I found I was greatly attracted to blind walls, only occasionally broken by the presence of a window. This closed-off quality gives it a near sculptural feel – an element more prominent in these recent paintings, and perhaps a reflection on the great frescos of the early renaissance.
